Rotimi Akin, the spokesperson for the House of Representatives, has clarified that lawmakers’ monthly salary is N600,000, contrary to the speculated N900,000.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, Akin addressed media reports suggesting discrepancies in lawmakers’ salaries and denied claims that members received their full July salary of N936,979.

He explained, “The actual monthly salary for members is N600,000, following deductions for advances such as housing, which are paid at the start of their term.”

Akin noted that a member who displayed his salary on television was an exception, having assumed office through a court decision months after the usual onboarding process.

He reaffirmed the House’s commitment to the July 18, 2024 resolution for a 50 percent salary reduction for six months. “We regret that this resolution was not implemented for July as intended,” he said. “The delay was due to necessary administrative procedures and coordination with financial institutions, with formal instructions issued on July 23.”

Akin assured that salary adjustments would be enforced moving forward, and he urged patience as the House remains committed to fulfilling its pledge and maintaining public trust.
