Renowned journalist and political analyst Dr. Reuben Abati has strongly condemned recent remarks by Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Edo State, describing them as inappropriate, divisive, and disrespectful to the people of Edo.

Abati took issue with comments implying that Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, would be unwelcome if he chose to marry a second wife from Edo. Challenging the logic behind such a stance, Abati asked pointedly: “Will Okpebholo say he cannot come to Edo and take an Edo woman?” He argued that the remark insulted the dignity of Edo women and misrepresented the state’s values of inclusivity and hospitality.

His criticism comes at a time of growing concern over the deteriorating tone of political discourse ahead of the Edo 2024 governorship election. With personal attacks and ethnic sentiments threatening to overshadow issue-based campaigning, Abati emphasized the need for responsible speech and mutual respect, especially in politically sensitive periods.

Many Nigerians have echoed Abati’s call for a public apology from Senator Okpebholo, urging political leaders to uphold values that reflect the unity and diversity of the Nigerian nation. They argue that no citizen should be made to feel unwelcome in any part of the country based on their background, political affiliation, or personal choices.

The incident underscores the broader importance of dignified leadership and respectful engagement in democratic processes. As campaigns intensify, voices like Dr. Abati’s continue to remind political actors of the need to place civility and national cohesion above partisan rhetoric.
