Rivers State Government Partners with NEMA on Flood Awareness Campaign
The Rivers State Government has announced that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) will deploy teams to the state and other high-risk areas to educate residents on flood preparedness and prevention.
This initiative follows a recent advisory from the Federal Government, which listed Rivers among the states facing a high risk of flooding this year.
In a statement released Tuesday by Hector Igbikiowubo, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Rivers State Government, residents—especially those in flood-prone communities—were urged to take immediate precautions to protect lives and property.
The government emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on illegal land reclamation, noting that such activities degrade the environment and disrupt natural drainage systems, increasing flood risks. It warned that unauthorized reclamation of wetlands and ecologically sensitive areas leaves communities more exposed during heavy rainfall and will not be tolerated.
Strict enforcement of environmental laws was pledged, with legal consequences for individuals or groups found violating them.
Residents are advised to:
-
Keep drainage systems clear;
-
Avoid dumping waste in waterways;
-
Relocate from flood-prone zones;
-
Cooperate with emergency response teams and adhere to official guidance;
-
Report illegal land reclamation and environmental violations.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring the safety of all residents. It called on the public to take proactive steps to minimize flood impacts and comply with all environmental regulations.
Historically, the Orashi region—including Ahoada East, Ahoada West, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGAs—is among the most flood-prone areas in Rivers State.
