Sallah: Cleric Urges Muslim Faithful to Practice Moderation

Dr. Sidiq Uthman, an Islamic cleric and lecturer in the Department of Religions at Lagos State University Ojo, has advised Muslims to exercise restraint during the Sallah celebration. Given the current economic situation and soaring prices of rams and other necessities, he emphasized the importance of financial prudence.

According to a market survey by Sunday NIGERIA NEWS 247, ram prices range from N250,000 to N700,000. In an interview with Saturday NIGERIA NEWS 247, Uthman urged Muslims to avoid lavish spending beyond their financial capacity.

He highlighted the importance of prioritizing basic necessities such as ensuring three meals a day and advised against incurring unnecessary financial strain. “People should not celebrate Sallah beyond their means,” he said. “They must also consider the upcoming school term for their children and manage their resources wisely.”

He further suggested that those who usually travel should reconsider if transport fares are unaffordable and celebrate locally instead. “The reality is that even affording one square meal is difficult, let alone buying a ram. Borrowing money is not advisable, especially when job security is uncertain,” he added. “There will be many more Sallah celebrations. Let’s hope for better circumstances next year.”

Additionally, Adepoju-Alaseyori Ridwanullahi, Lead Missionary at Nasrul llalhi l Fathi (NASFAT), echoed similar sentiments. He urged Muslims to spend judiciously and live within their means, stating, “Muslims must cut their coat according to their cloth and avoid borrowing money.”
