The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) has urged authorities to enforce building codes and safety standards for educational institutions nationwide. This call follows the recent collapse of a school building at Saint Academy in Jos, Plateau State.

In a statement signed by Acting National President Mrs. Geraldine Etuk, the NCWS emphasized the need for immediate and decisive action from all levels of government to prevent future tragedies. The council advocated for thorough inspections of all school buildings, particularly those in dilapidated conditions, to identify and address structural weaknesses.

Regular maintenance checks should be mandated to ensure safety in schools. The council stressed that the safety and well-being of children are paramount, highlighting the urgent need for stringent measures to improve the condition of school buildings across the nation. They called for adequate funding for the renovation and reconstruction of unsafe school buildings.

“This tragedy underscores the profound impact that inadequate infrastructure can have on women and children, who are often the most vulnerable members of our society,” the NCWS mourned. They also advised the development and implementation of comprehensive emergency response plans for schools to swiftly address potential hazards and ensure the safety of pupils and staff.

Extending their heartfelt condolences to the families of the affected victims, the NCWS emphasized the need for authorities to take appropriate actions to prevent further incidents.
