Security Consultant Calls for Urgent Aviation Security Reforms After Ibom Air Incident
Security consultant Onyekachi Adekoya has called for immediate reforms in aviation security following a recent incident involving a passenger and cabin crew members on an Ibom Air flight.
Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s program, The Morning Brief, Adekoya stressed the importance of redundancy in security planning. He noted that there was ample time to safely evacuate the passenger, but the crew appeared unprepared to handle the situation.
“If something more serious had occurred, what would have happened? Clearly, this is a cause for concern and an opportunity for additional training,” Adekoya said. “This isn’t about standards, protocols, or procedures—it’s a cultural issue. It reflects a broader problem in Nigeria.”
Describing aviation security as a global priority, he expressed worry over what he called a lack of seriousness in Nigeria’s approach. He urged the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, to take decisive action against security lapses, highlighting problems such as faulty facilities, non-functional equipment, and communication failures.
“I believe this incident should serve as a wake-up call,” Adekoya added.
