President Bola Tinubu has assigned Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.

In a statement released on Sunday by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, it was confirmed that Shettima will represent Tinubu at the event.

The meeting, scheduled to take place from October 21 to 26 in Apia, Samoa, will bring together King Charles of England and leaders from 56 Commonwealth nations. Discussions will revolve around the theme, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth,” with a focus on resilience, potential, and fostering a connected and digital Commonwealth.

The gathering will also see the election of the next Commonwealth Secretary-General, who will be chosen from Africa. Candidates from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia are in the running, with Nigeria playing a key role as the largest African member.

In addition to participating in discussions on the global economy, environmental challenges, and security issues, Shettima will use the Commonwealth Business Forum to attract investors to Nigeria. He will also attend the People’s Forum, where global development issues will be addressed, and engage in bilateral meetings.

Samoa will be Shettima’s 11th foreign destination and marks his 12th trip abroad since assuming office, having spent 56 days overseas and visited 10 countries, including Italy, Russia, South Africa, the U.S., China, and Sweden.
