South East Governors to Meet Tinubu Over Detained Nnamdi Kanu
The South East Governors’ Forum has committed to visiting President Bola Tinubu to request the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
The Forum, comprising Governors Hope Uzodinma (Imo), Alex Otti (Abia), Chukwuma Soludo (Anambra), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), and Peter Mbah (Enugu), convened on Tuesday in Enugu State.
Forum Chairman Uzodinma announced the resolution, noting that a delegation including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku, and the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, had paid a solidarity visit.
Regarding the security and economic summit held in Owerri, the Forum agreed to implement recommendations related to security and economic integration, affirming their commitment to actionable plans.
Uzodinma stated, “The Forum resolved to visit Mr. President to discuss pressing issues concerning the South-East region and to interface with the Federal Government to secure the release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.”
The Governors’ Forum also expressed condolences to the governments and people of Abia, Ebonyi, and Imo States, and to the family of Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, following his passing.
Nnamdi Kanu, who has been on trial since 2015 for his secessionist activities, fled Nigeria in 2017 after being granted bail but was rearrested in Kenya and repatriated in 2021. He has since been detained by the Department of State Services.
On Monday, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Kanu’s suit against the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Department of State Services, and its Director General. Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimako, vowed to appeal the decision.
