TCN Commissions Two New Transformers in Kebbi, Boosts Power Supply in Northwest
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has energised two newly installed power transformers at its 330/132/33kV Birnin Kebbi Transmission Substation, significantly increasing power capacity in Kebbi State and neighbouring areas.
In a statement released on Sunday, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah confirmed that the 100 MVA and 150 MVA transformers were energised at 1:18 p.m. and 2:56 p.m., respectively, on Friday, June 27, 2025.
With the commissioning of the new equipment, the substation’s total capacity has risen from 300 MVA to 450 MVA. This expansion enables the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company to access an additional 120 megawatts (MW) of bulk power for distribution across Kebbi, Sokoto, and surrounding areas.
The upgrade also supports TCN’s ability to sustain regular bulk power supply to Niamey, Niger Republic.
“We are committed to the continued expansion and maintenance of the nation’s transmission system to ensure a more effective and efficient bulk power transmission nationwide,” Mbah stated.
This development comes as Nigeria’s electricity generation was reported to have reached 5,148.34 MW as of Friday, April 25, 2025, according to figures from the national grid.
