President Bola Tinubu has appointed former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, as co-chairman of the Presidential Committee on Implementation of Livestock Reforms. Tinubu made this announcement during the committee’s inauguration on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The committee’s mandate is to tackle the challenges hindering agricultural productivity and to create new opportunities that will benefit farmers, herders, processors, and distributors within the livestock-farming value chain.

Tinubu emphasized the need for collaborative efforts from members representing both public and private sectors, state governors, and all Nigerians to ensure successful implementation of the reforms.

“In our various states, we have great opportunities; why should Nigerians continue to face conflicts?” Tinubu questioned, highlighting the potential of the committee to establish a dedicated Ministry of Livestock Development. This ministry, according to Tinubu, would facilitate research and cross-breeding, aiming to curtail senseless killings and revitalize traditional livestock farming methods.

Acknowledging the crucial role of stakeholders, including state governments, Tinubu underscored the importance of reviewing and repositioning livestock farming practices to unlock new avenues for growth and prosperity.

He expressed gratitude to Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for assembling a team of seasoned experts dedicated to activating opportunities within the livestock sector.
