Tinubu Commemorates Democracy Day: Salutes Abiola, Warns Against Anti-Democratic Forces

President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola, and other democracy heroes, including General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and Pa Alfred Rewane, among others, in his Democracy Day address. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against threats to democracy while acknowledging the economic challenges and pledging support to citizens.

Tinubu honored those who sacrificed their lives for democracy, emphasizing the contributions of various individuals such as Chief Anthony Enahoro, Chief Abraham Adesanya, and Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu. He praised the role of the media in pushing back against military rule and highlighted the perseverance of Nigerian journalists.

The President emphasized the importance of holding transparent elections and the values of freedom and liberty in democracy. He urged Nigerians to defend democracy against those who seek to exploit economic challenges for their interests.

Tinubu vowed to uphold democracy and preserve citizens’ rights, promising to cement democracy as Nigeria’s way of life. He stressed the need for economic reforms to address longstanding issues and committed to submitting an executive bill on the minimum wage negotiations to the National Assembly.

Assuring impartiality in governance, Tinubu pledged to continue engaging in reasoned discussions and principled compromises for the betterment of Nigeria. He concluded by reaffirming his dedication to creating a nation where no one faces oppression.
