President Bola Tinubu praised Claudia Sheinbaum on her groundbreaking victory as the first female President of Mexico.

In a statement released by Tinubu’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, it was emphasized that Sheinbaum’s election marks a significant step forward for women in government and shatters the barriers that have held them back.

Tinubu also highlighted that Sheinbaum’s win sends a powerful message globally, emphasizing the importance of women not just participating but leading in decision-making processes that impact countless lives.

The President extended congratulations to Mexico and urged for further collaboration between Nigeria and Mexico in various areas of common interest.

Based on the official results released by the National Electoral Institute, Sheinbaum, a 61-year-old scientist and former Mexico City mayor, secured approximately 58-60 percent of the votes.

The institute reported that she was leading by over 30 percentage points compared to her main rival, Xochitl Galvez, who acknowledged her defeat.

Sheinbaum also had a lead of more than 50 percentage points over Jorge Alvarez Maynez, the only male candidate in the race.

Her popularity is largely attributed to the support of outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a leftist leader and mentor with an approval rating exceeding 60 percent but limited to one term in office.
