President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, following her election as the incoming Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

The announcement was made during the Commonwealth leaders’ meeting held in Apia, Samoa, where Botchwey was elected as the 7th Secretary-General. Having served as Ghana’s foreign minister for the past seven years and possessing a rich background in public service, Botchwey is set to assume her new role on April 1, 2025.

Her election is particularly significant as she becomes the second African to hold this position in the Commonwealth’s 75-year history, following Chief Emeka Anyaoku from Nigeria, who served from 1990 to 2000.

President Tinubu emphasized that Botchwey’s extensive experience in foreign affairs and regional development uniquely qualifies her for this prestigious role. He expressed confidence that her leadership will infuse the Commonwealth with renewed energy and commitment to fostering meaningful economic and political partnerships.

This, he believes, will not only drive development across member nations but also enhance the collective voice of the Commonwealth in global affairs. The President’s remarks reflect a broader vision for the Commonwealth, one that seeks to unite member countries in pursuit of shared goals and aspirations.

Furthermore, President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening intra-Commonwealth trade and supporting African exports. He underscored the importance of a unified presence at the United Nations, advocating for an African bid for permanent representation on the Security Council.

As the Commonwealth embarks on this new chapter under Botchwey’s leadership, President Tinubu looks forward to collaborating with her to advance the organization’s vision of peace, equity, and prosperity for all member states.

He also took a moment to express gratitude to the outgoing Secretary-General, Baroness Patricia Scotland, for her years of dedicated service, wishing her success in her future endeavors. This transition in leadership represents not only a significant milestone for Botchwey but also a pivotal moment for the Commonwealth as it continues to navigate global challenges.
