President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Peter Rufai, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper who “wrote his name in gold” in Nigeria’s and Africa’s sporting history.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, the President paid tribute to the football icon affectionately known as “Dodomayana.”

Tinubu fondly remembered Rufai’s heroic role as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the Super Eagles’ historic triumph at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia. He also recalled Rufai’s participation in Nigeria’s landmark debut at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.

Highlighting Rufai’s lasting legacy, the President said it would live on in the hearts of Nigerians and football fans worldwide. He also acknowledged Rufai’s involvement in the 1998 World Cup in France and his pioneering efforts in professionalising Nigerian football through his career in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

“Starting his career with Stationery Stores of Lagos in 1980, Rufai was among the earliest Nigerian footballers to turn professional, bringing honour to the nation and opening new doors for young talents,” Tinubu added.

Beyond his achievements on the pitch, Rufai, a prince from the royal family of Idimu, Lagos, was celebrated for mentoring aspiring footballers through his Staruf Football Academy.

“He continued to inspire, mentor, and nurture young footballers,” the President said.
