President Bola Tinubu Announces New Minimum Wage Agreement in Democracy Day Address

President Bola Tinubu disclosed in his national broadcast on the 2024 Democracy Day that a consensus has been reached between the Federal Government and organised labour regarding the long-debated new minimum wage.

Tinubu revealed that an executive bill will soon be sent to the National Assembly to formalize the agreement on the new minimum wage.

He emphasized his administration’s commitment to a democratic approach in addressing labour unions’ demands, opting for cooperation over conflict.

Tinubu vowed to ensure that no Nigerian is oppressed and reiterated his dedication to the task until a Nigeria where no one is oppressed is achieved.

He urged Nigerians not to be weary but hopeful for a better future, emphasizing the importance of moving forward together and keeping the flame of democracy burning for generations to come.

The announcement followed nationwide indefinite strikes by organised labour on June 3 over the Federal Government’s refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

Despite various proposals and failed meetings, the government and labour unions reached an agreement, with an executive bill forthcoming to formalize the new minimum wage.
