1. On Monday, the leadership of the organised labour advised President Bola Tinubu to avert the impending nationwide protest by engaging in dialogue with its organisers. The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, urged Tinubu to heed the grievances of the people, noting that millions of Nigerians are suffering due to the current hardships.

2. The Federal Government has intervened in the dispute between Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). On Monday, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, held a high-level meeting with key stakeholders to address and resolve the issues surrounding the Dangote Refinery.

4. An electronics dealer, Yusuf Tijjani, lost property worth over N2.6 million in a fire that destroyed his shop in Kwali Area Council of the FCT. Tijjani, popularly known as Babson, reported that the incident occurred on Saturday around 3 am after he had closed his shop, located behind the motor park in Kwali town.

On Monday, July 22, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Olawale Edun, defended the federal government’s proposed one-off tax on 2023 foreign exchange (forex) gains by banks. On Monday, the Federal Government stated that the N3 trillion recurrent component of the N6.2 trillion supplementary budget before the National Assembly will mainly be used to address the new national minimum wage. 9. On Monday, the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, upheld the sentence of 15 years imprisonment for Mutiu Ogundare, the dethroned Baale of Shangisha in Magodo, Lagos State, for faking his abduction. The lead judge of the three-man panel, Justice Peter Bassi, delivered the judgment affirming the decision of the High Court.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen announced that the House of Representatives’ decision to cut their salaries by 50 percent to assist indigent Nigerians amid the current economic challenges can be renewed after six months. The Speaker emphasized that the members of the House understand the economic struggles of Nigerians and believe no sacrifice is too great to alleviate the hardship.
