1. The United States Mission in Nigeria has advised some of its staff to stay home on the first two days of the planned nationwide protests. In an emergency warning issued on Wednesday night, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos instructed that only essential staff should work on Thursday, August 1, and Friday, August 2, 2024.

2. At least 19 people were killed on Wednesday when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram insurgents, exploded at a local joint in Kawuri village, Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State. This incident occurred three days after insurgents attacked a police station in Jakana town, also in Konduga LGA.

3. A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has prohibited protesters from marching on the streets of the nation’s capital. Justice Sylvanus Chinedu Oriji issued the ruling in response to an ex-parte application by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, restricting participants in the proposed #EndBadGovernance protest from demonstrating on the streets.

4. An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found at the fence of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service on Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday. The discovery was made on the eve of the planned nationwide protest against the economic hardship in the country.

5. The Edo State Police Command has pledged to support and protect peaceful protesters in the state. Addressing journalists on Wednesday evening, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, affirmed that it is the citizens’ right to protest.

6. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State warned that the government will not tolerate any form of violence during the forthcoming planned protests. He made this statement while addressing business leaders, traditional rulers, and religious leaders at Government House, Kano, on Wednesday.

7. The National Assembly on Wednesday repealed and re-enacted the 2024 Appropriation Act, incorporating an additional N6.2 trillion as requested by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on July 23 to fund legacy capital projects and the new minimum wage of N70,000.

8. The House of Representatives Special Joint Committee investigating issues in the petroleum sector has instructed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to halt what it described as the “mortgage of Nigeria’s future crude oil” until the committee completes its investigation.

9. Banks and other financial institutions across Nigeria will be closed on Thursday, August 1, 2024, due to the planned hunger strike and protests. While no official announcements of closure were made, conversations with bank employees revealed that they were advised not to report to work on Thursday as the banks monitor the situation.

10. The Senate has called on Nigerians and the organizers of the nationwide protests to reconsider their plans for the sake of the country. The Senate noted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has initiated policies within its first year in office that are expected to benefit Nigerians in the future.
