1. President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), approximately one year after he initially assumed leadership of the regional bloc. Tinubu was first elected to the position in Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023.

2. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will swear in 12 new judges of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on Wednesday. A statement by the Director of Press and Information at the Supreme Court, Dr. Festus Akande, said the event will take place at 10 am in the main courtroom of the Supreme Court.

3. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has appealed the ruling of a Federal High Court in Abuja that acquitted Abiodun Agbele, an aide of former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, and three others in a N1.219 billion money laundering case brought against them by the commission.

4. Fuel scarcity is gradually emerging in Lagos and other parts of the country as private depot owners increased the ex-depot price of petrol from N630 to N720 per litre. This development has exacerbated fuel shortages in Abuja and surrounding states, with some filling stations selling PMS for as much as N900 per litre.

A 40-year-old woman, Rafiat Sheriff, and her seven-year-old daughter, Asisat Sheriff, were killed in a gas explosion at their home on Church Street along Èbúté Road in the Ibafo area of Ogun State. The incident, which occurred at about 8:30 pm on Saturday, also left two other people with varying degrees of injuries.

6. The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 46-year-old ritualist who attempted to slaughter a 10-year-old boy hawking pepper in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital. The suspect, identified as Isiaka Adeniyi, was arrested on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, in the Oke-Foma area of Ilorin West Local Government Area.

7. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a community head in Osun State, Ige Babatunde, for alleged possession of cannabis plants. He was found with fresh cannabis plants weighing five kilograms. Additionally, a corps member, Yusuf Abdulrahman, was arrested with a consignment of Loud weighing 1.250kg at a corpers’ lodge in Kano State.

8. Workers in Nigerian universities announced on Sunday a nationwide protest starting Thursday, July 18, 2024, over their four months of withheld salaries. The workers, under the aegis of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, stated that their meeting with government officials had collapsed.

9. A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered Ms. Sadia Umar-Farouk, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, to account for the payment of N729 billion to 24.3 million poor Nigerians over six months. The court also mandated her to provide the list and details of the beneficiaries, the number of states covered, and the payments per state.

10. The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed on Sunday the kidnapping of two journalists and their families in the Danhonu community in Millennium City, Kaduna, on Saturday night. The spokesperson of the command, Mansir Hassan, said police operatives are doing their best to secure their release.
