The United States Mission in Nigeria has temporarily closed its embassy in Abuja and consulate in Lagos today as a mark of respect for the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The symbolic gesture reflects the U.S. government’s recognition of Buhari’s significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape and his contributions to U.S.-Nigeria relations.

In an official statement, the U.S. Mission expressed heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the Nigerian government, and the people of Nigeria. The closure underscores the deep diplomatic ties between both countries and the respect Buhari earned on the global stage.

During his time in office, Buhari maintained active cooperation with the United States, particularly in areas such as counterterrorism, regional security, and economic development. U.S. officials have credited him with helping to advance democratic governance and bolster stability in West Africa.

While routine consular services are suspended for the day, the mission assured the public that critical services will resume promptly. Citizens in need of emergency assistance have been advised to consult the U.S. Mission’s website for updated contact information.

The decision to close both diplomatic offices is widely viewed as a meaningful tribute to a leader whose impact resonated beyond Nigeria’s borders.
