Minister of Works Dismisses Compensation Claims by Landmark Group Over Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Demolition

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has rebuffed claims from Paul Onwuanibe, the Group Chief Executive Officer and founder of The Landmark Group, regarding compensation linked to the ongoing demolition for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

The Federal Government is presently demolishing structures along the shoreline to facilitate the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, impacting various properties, including those owned by The Landmark Group, notably the Landmark beach in Lagos State.

Umahi clarified that infrastructures belonging to Landmark were not affected and therefore, Onwuanibe cannot demand compensation from the Federal Government.

Addressing reporters, Umahi explained that the beach was situated within the designated right of way and shoreline, making it ineligible for compensation.

He emphasized, “No claim for Landmark, we spared all his infrastructure, we don’t pay for the demolition of shanties because it is on our right-of-way, 15 meters from the shoreline, so he has no claim.”

Umahi further asserted that while Onwuanibe engages in political maneuvers, he, as an engineer, prioritizes engineering tasks, adding, “While he does all the politics, I am an engineer, I’ll do the engineering work. I don’t know the attention he is seeking.”
