The United Nations has strongly condemned the deadly attack in Darajamal village, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, where at least 63 people were killed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

The assault, which occurred on Friday evening, claimed the lives of five soldiers and 58 civilians, and left a trail of destruction. More than 20 houses, vehicles, food supplies, and other belongings of resettled Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) were reportedly destroyed.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, described the incident as “appalling” and called on Nigerian authorities to ensure those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.

“Preliminary reports indicate that more than 50 civilians were killed when suspected members of a non-state armed group attacked Darajamal. An unknown number of people were also abducted, while others fled with injuries. At least 28 houses were reportedly burned,” Fall stated.

He extended his condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Borno State, and called for the immediate and unconditional release of those abducted during the attack.

The UN highlighted that this massacre reflects an escalating trend of violent attacks in Nigeria’s northeastern states—Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe—this year. These attacks have increasingly targeted farmers, fishermen, traders, IDP camps, and vulnerable rural communities.

Reaffirming its support, the UN pledged continued collaboration with Nigerian authorities to assist those affected by the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in the region.
