Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has disclosed that his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, left the state owing local contractors approximately N180 billion before leaving office on November 12, 2024.

Governor Okpebholo made the revelation during a ceremony marking 365 days in office in Benin City, themed: “365 Days: Rebuilding a New Edo. Celebrating One Year of Practical Governance.”

He explained that out of over N600 billion in total local and foreign debts inherited, the N180 billion owed to contractors has already begun to be paid, though he noted that the process for securing some of the loans lacked transparency.

Describing the state he inherited, Okpebholo said Edo was weighed down by rot, debt, insecurity, and distrust, likening it to a war zone plagued by cult killings, kidnapping, armed robbery, and cybercrime. He added that in 2024 alone, over 300 cult-related killings were recorded.

To tackle insecurity, the governor said his administration had strengthened anti-cultism laws, supplied 60 vans and 40 motorcycles to security agencies, and recruited and trained 2,500 officers into the Edo State Security Corps. He asserted, “Edo will no longer be a safe haven for criminals.”

On healthcare, Okpebholo highlighted that he inherited a collapsed system, with hospitals lacking drugs and low staff morale. His administration has since begun constructing new primary healthcare centres, providing diagnostic equipment, and building a new 150-bed hospital.

Regarding infrastructure, he revealed that contracts have been awarded for 28 new roads totaling over 250 kilometres, alongside two flyovers at Ramat Park and Adesuwa Junction in Benin City.

The governor also highlighted socio-economic initiatives, including the creation of over 10,000 jobs, a N1 billion interest-free loan scheme for small traders, and a N1 billion scholarship fund for indigent students.

Okpebholo concluded by commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and support, noting that the guidance from the presidency had been critical to his administration’s progress over the first year.
