Chimamanda Adichie to Young Women: “Be Careful Who You Marry—It Can Shape Your Entire Life”
Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has offered heartfelt advice to young women, urging them to be intentional and discerning when choosing life partners.
Speaking at a recent event titled Dream Count, Adichie emphasized that a woman’s choice of a life partner can significantly influence the course of her life. She warned against settling out of desperation, noting that the wrong choice can lead to long-term emotional and personal consequences.
“It’s so important for a woman to have her own—a sense of self-fulfilment. It doesn’t matter what it is,” Adichie said. “Sometimes as a young woman, you can tell that the person you’re with isn’t good for you, but you’re desperate to get married. Do not settle. Be careful who you choose. The person you choose as a life partner will make a huge difference in your life.”
She continued, “If you choose someone who is kind and supportive, it will make all the difference. There are good men out there.”
Her candid message resonated widely on social media, sparking a flurry of reactions from women sharing personal reflections and support.
Reactions online included:
