2027: Nigerians won’t vote for a man being fed by wife – Hassan to Amaechi
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alwan Hassan, has sparked debate following his remarks suggesting that Nigeria should not be led by a man who is financially supported by his wife.
Hassan made the comments during an appearance on Channels Television, in response to recent statements by former Minister of Transportation and 2027 presidential hopeful, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
Amaechi, a former two-term governor of Rivers State, had earlier appeared on the same programme, where he was questioned about the source of his wealth. In response, he credited his wife, Judith Amaechi, describing her as the “backbone” of their family and highlighting her entrepreneurial success, which he said predates his political career.
However, Hassan took issue with Amaechi’s comments, claiming they implied a lack of leadership within his own household.
“We cannot hand over this country to people who say their wives are taking care of them,” Hassan said. “We want a man who is in charge of his home, a complete man. Not someone being fed by his wife.”
He added:
“A man that is being fed by his wife cannot lead Nigeria. That’s what I’m saying.”
Hassan’s remarks have stirred controversy, with critics describing them as sexist and dismissive of modern family dynamics, where dual-income households are common and spousal support is seen as a strength rather than a weakness.
Amaechi, for his part, had praised his wife’s industriousness and financial independence, positioning her success as a source of pride and stability within their family.
As the 2027 presidential race begins to take shape, the exchange signals early signs of political tension and ideological divides within the ruling APC.
