2027: Why I’m not afraid of losing ADC ticket to Atiku – Peter Obi
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has said he harbours no fear of losing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a visit to LEA Primary School in Kapwa, Abuja, Obi addressed growing speculation that Atiku might take over the party’s presidential ticket. He dismissed the rumours, describing Atiku as a respected elder and leader.
“Atiku is a very dear elder brother and leader whom I hold in high regard. I’m not afraid of losing the ADC presidential ticket to him,” Obi said.
The speculation follows reports of several Atiku loyalists from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defecting to the ADC coalition, sparking concerns about a possible internal power struggle within the emerging alliance.
In a recent interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku declared he would not step down for any aspirant in the ADC unless defeated in the primaries—a statement that has stirred anxiety and intensified discussions around his 2027 ambitions.
However, Obi downplayed any sense of rivalry, emphasising that the coalition’s mission is focused on national unity and rescue.
“I’m a member of the Labour Party, and I’m part of the coalition that is forming under the ADC for the 2027 presidential election,” he said. “This is not about competition. It’s about coming together for the greater good. I believe all well-meaning Nigerians—across party lines—must unite to rescue this country.”
