Anambra 2025: APC’s Amaefuna warns against violating zoning policy

A prominent member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Anambra State, Mr. Pope Amaefuna, has cautioned the party against fielding a candidate outside the southern senatorial zone, warning that it could disrupt the existing zoning arrangement in the state.

In an interview with journalists in Awka, Amaefuna emphasized that the APC risks losing the 2025 election if it selects a candidate from any zone other than the South, where current Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo is serving his first term.

Amaefuna stated, “Anambra State’s politics has benefited from stability, equity, and fairness due to the zoning principle. Major political parties have adhered to this power rotation formula in past elections.”

He continued, “APC can no longer afford to remain in opposition in Anambra State. All efforts must focus on securing a power shift in the 2025 governorship election. Given the electorate’s preferences, failing to field a strong candidate from Anambra South could doom the party’s chances, as it would disrupt the remaining four-year term intended for the South.”

Amaefuna warned against disregarding the zoning agreement, suggesting that such actions are driven by ulterior motives and could lead to the party’s defeat in the upcoming election.

He added, “Proponents of abandoning zoning should be cautious, as they may regret their stance. Any party ignoring the established rotation of the governorship seat has little chance of success, supported by historical evidence.”

Amaefuna urged the APC to unite behind a strong candidate from Anambra South with the capability and grassroots support to challenge APGA effectively. He also called for the identification and punishment of those within the party who are working against its interests for personal gain.

“APC cannot continue to undermine its own candidates. It is time to unite, address internal issues, and make a significant impact in 2025,” he concluded.
