APC floors PDP in Taraba’s Karim 1 constituency by-elections
In a surprising political development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured key victories in the recently concluded State Assembly by-elections in Taraba State—traditionally considered a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially declared APC candidates winners after vote collation across the affected constituencies. The by-elections were conducted to fill legislative vacancies created by the death or resignation of former lawmakers.
In the Karim 1 constituency, APC candidate Abner Shittu emerged victorious, defeating his PDP rival by a clear margin. The win marks a significant political shift in a region long dominated by the opposition PDP.
Election observers reported that the polls were largely peaceful, with moderate voter turnout. INEC commended voters, security agencies, and election officials for their roles in ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and inclusivity.
Reacting to the outcome, the APC in Taraba described the victory as a sign of increasing public trust in the party’s policy direction. The party credited its success to effective grassroots mobilization and strategic engagement with local communities.
Political analysts have characterized the APC’s performance—particularly in Karim 1—as a wake-up call for the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The APC’s victory, small as it may seem, sends a loud warning to the PDP. It’s a reminder that political loyalty is no longer guaranteed. Strategy, visibility, and community connection are what win elections now,” one analyst told Nigeria News 247.
Observers also noted that the APC’s success was driven by sustained grassroots efforts and an ability to capitalize on internal divisions within the PDP, including complacency and a lack of unity.
“Karim 1 should not be seen as just a by-election. It mirrors the electorate’s shifting mood. Voter loyalty is in flux, and the PDP must act fast to remain relevant,” another analyst added.
With these wins, the APC has not only increased its representation in the Taraba State House of Assembly but also delivered a strong message ahead of 2027.
As the next general election approaches, analysts warn that unless the PDP addresses internal rifts, reconnects with its grassroots base, and modernizes its strategy, the ruling APC could continue to make gains even in historically opposition-aligned territories.
At the time of reporting, the PDP has yet to issue an official response to the by-election results.
