Former Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Sikirulah Ogundele, has taken a jab at the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Ladipupo Adetutu, following his defeat at the polling unit and ward level in Iperu-Remo during Saturday’s bye-election.

Nigeria News 247 reports that Ogundele, along with other PDP members, recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The election was held to fill the vacant seat left by the late Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the former lawmaker for Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency, who passed away in January after a brief illness.

At Adebutu’s polling unit, Iperu III in Ikenne Local Government, the APC candidate polled 96 votes, the PDP candidate 60 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidates received one vote each. The Labour Party (LP) recorded no votes.

The main contenders were APC’s Adesola Elegbeji and PDP’s Bolarinwa Oluwole.

Ogundele attributed the PDP’s defeat to the recent mass defections of credible party members across Ogun State to the APC, describing the ruling party as more formidable, organized, and credible.

He said the election result reflected the true wishes of the majority of electorates in Remo Federal Constituency and, by extension, the people of Ogun State who strongly support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and Governor Abiodun’s government.

Ogundele predicted that the PDP would suffer further losses in upcoming elections, arguing that the party has lost the trust of many both in the state and nationally due to its current leadership.
