Ex-Lagos LP Gubernatorial Candidate, Rhodes-Vivour, Joins ADC
The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos State during the 2023 general elections, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
His defection was formally announced on Saturday at a political gathering held in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. The event, however, was briefly overshadowed by tension following an alleged attempt by suspected political thugs to disrupt proceedings. The presence of police operatives at the venue further raised concerns among attendees.
Addressing supporters after receiving the ADC flag, Rhodes-Vivour clarified that the event was not a campaign rally but a constitutionally protected political meeting. He questioned the deployment of police officers to the venue and stated his intention to seek an explanation from the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, asking whether the officers were there to ensure safety or to intimidate participants.
Explaining the rationale behind his move to the ADC, Rhodes-Vivour said his decision was driven by the urgent need to build stronger coalitions among opposition parties in Nigeria.
“This coalition is about rescuing Nigeria. Since the 2023 elections, I have consistently maintained that the opposition cannot afford to remain fragmented,” he said. “To unseat those who wield power through thuggery, violence, and intimidation, we must build a robust alliance that reflects the will of the people.”
He warned that unless the political culture in Nigeria is changed, governance will continue to be ineffective and citizens will remain marginalized.
Expressing confidence in his new political platform, Rhodes-Vivour said, “I am happy to join the ADC family. My prayer is that God grants our leaders the wisdom and courage to chart a new course for this country through unity and purposeful leadership.”
