Fix insecurity at home before seeking UN security council seat – ADC slams Tinubu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the Bola Tinubu administration for seeking a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council while insecurity continues to plague various parts of Nigeria.

In a strongly worded statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party described the move as “absurd,” arguing that the federal government should focus on protecting the lives and property of Nigerians before pursuing expanded global responsibilities.

“The ADC finds it absurd that the Tinubu administration could be requesting a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, even as bandits slaughter Nigerians at home and take control of some of the nation’s territories,” Abdullahi said.

The party cited recent deadly attacks in Zamfara and Katsina states, including a massacre of worshippers in a mosque in Yandoto village, Zamfara, where several people were killed and abducted.

According to the ADC, no fewer than 140 people have been killed in the two states over the past two months. The party also referenced data from Amnesty International indicating that more than 10,000 Nigerians have lost their lives to armed groups as of May 2025.

“These are not just numbers—they were human beings, they were Nigerians that this administration had promised renewed hope,” the statement added.

The ADC further alleged that armed gangs operating in Zamfara State had extorted over ₦56 million from local farmers as a condition for granting them access to their own farmlands.

The party called on the federal government to address internal security challenges with urgency and sincerity before making appeals for greater international roles.
