INEC Extends Voters Registration in Edo, Ondo

After consulting with stakeholders in a review session, the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) announced an extension of the voter registration period for Edo and Ondo States.

The original deadline for registration in the two states was set for June 5, 2024. However, due to requests from stakeholders, the commission has decided to extend the registration period from Thursday, June 6 to Sunday, June 9, 2024.

This extension aims to allow more eligible individuals to register. Additionally, the commission has also extended the daily operating hours of the registration centers from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Moreover, it has expanded the number of centers from the initial 397 wards to now include all 36 Local Government offices of the commission in Benin City and Akure.

According to a recent statement, additional machines will soon be dispatched to regions with specific needs, such as challenging terrain or community issues.

INEC also noted that detailed information regarding the names and locations of LGA offices has been uploaded to their websites and social media platforms for registration assistance in the respective states.

The commission reported that voter registration is currently underway in these states and, as of June 3rd, 2024, a total of 120,458 new voters have registered within the first eight days of the CVR. Among these new registrations, 55,861 (46.4%) are male and 64,597 (53.6%) are female.

The report stated that out of the total 82,003 registered voters, a significant 68.8% are young adults aged between 18 to 34 years.

Regarding occupation, there are 43,419 (36.8%) students and a small percentage of 812 (0.67%) individuals with disabilities among the registered voters.

The report clarified that these numbers are initial and emphasized that the final figures will be released based on state and registration category after data verification using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
