The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the recommencement of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) process in Edo and Ondo states, allowing eligible citizens who are not registered voters to participate. This announcement precedes the governorship elections scheduled for September 21 and November 16, 2024, in Edo and Ondo states, respectively.

During a consultative meeting with political party leaders in preparation for the 2024 Edo and Ondo states governorship elections, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, revealed the details of the CVR initiative. He outlined that the registration would be conducted at ward levels and state headquarters, rather than the previous method of using local government area offices and designated centers. The registration period in the two states will occur simultaneously from Monday, May 27, 2024, to Wednesday, June 5, 2024, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm daily, including weekends.

Yakubu emphasized that the CVR is exclusively for new registrants and those seeking to transfer their registration, cautioning against double or multiple registrations as they are illegal. Lost or damaged voters’ cards will be replaced during the exercise without requiring fresh registration. In Edo and Ondo states, a total of 397 walk-in registration centers will be established, comprising 192 centers in Edo State and 203 centers in Ondo State, alongside state offices in Benin City and Akure.

Each registration center will be staffed by two officials selected from regular INEC staff and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Training for at least 794 officials to manage the centers will commence shortly. Detailed information about the registration centers and other relevant details will be made available on INEC’s website and social media platforms for public awareness.
