Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, over his recent warning to Obi not to enter the state without prior permission.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Okonkwo described the governor’s statement as “illegal, irresponsible, and largely illiterate.”

He cited constitutional provisions that guarantee every Nigerian citizen the right to freedom of movement and association, asserting that no governor has the authority to restrict such rights.

“Section 41 of the Nigerian Constitution clearly states that every citizen shall be entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof. No Nigerian citizen shall be denied entry into, or exit from, any part of the country,” Okonkwo said.

He emphasized that this includes Edo State, and therefore any attempt to bar Peter Obi—or any citizen—from entering the state is unconstitutional.

Okonkwo also referenced Sections 39 and 40 of the Constitution, which guarantee freedom of expression, assembly, and association.

“The governor’s comment violates multiple constitutional rights. It is not just unlawful—it reflects a worrying disregard for democratic norms and civil liberties,” he added.

Governor Okpebholo had come under criticism following his remarks suggesting Obi’s recent visit to the state contributed to unrest and warning that such visits should not happen again without official clearance.
