Julius Abure, the factional chairman of the Labour Party (LP), recently met with Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), at the minister’s residence in Abuja.

While the agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed, the development comes amid ongoing tensions within the Labour Party, particularly surrounding the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Just days before the meeting, Abure’s faction had publicly urged Obi to exit the LP following his reported alignment with a coalition involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The faction accused Obi of pursuing personal political interests at odds with the party’s direction.

Wike, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) currently serving in the APC-led federal government, has previously been accused by opposition leaders of playing a behind-the-scenes role in deepening internal divisions within the LP and other opposition parties.

The meeting also follows Abure’s recent warning to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, a Labour Party member, cautioning him against aligning with the party’s rival caretaker committee or misrepresenting the party’s internal dynamics.

The timing of the meeting between Abure and Wike has fueled speculation about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
