Lagos APC Condemns #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest, Accuses Opposition of Stoking Unrest
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanu protests, describing them as politically motivated and orchestrated attempts to stir unrest under the guise of activism.
In a statement issued Monday by the party’s spokesperson, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, the APC alleged that the demonstrations are being fueled by opposition figures who have resorted to “reckless politics” after suffering electoral defeats.
“This so-called protest is not about justice; it is about political frustration,” Oladejo said. “It represents the height of bitter, destructive politics—an attempt by those rejected at the polls to exploit national issues for cheap relevance.”
While acknowledging the democratic rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, the APC argued that the protests go beyond legitimate advocacy and instead reflect a “carefully scripted” campaign to destabilize the nation.
Oladejo accused opposition leaders of sponsoring the agitation for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, stating that their involvement is “a classic case of the hand of Jacob but the voice of Esau—deceptive manipulation masked as activism.”
“At a time when the South East is still healing from the scars of violent agitations, kidnappings, and enforced sit-at-home orders, these individuals are mocking the pain of victims and risking further instability,” the statement added.
Highlighting the socio-economic toll of past unrest in the region, Oladejo said the protests disregard the suffering of ordinary citizens, including traders, students, and families affected by insecurity.
He emphasized that Nnamdi Kanu’s case is before a competent and independent judiciary, asserting that “no one is above the law” and that “justice must follow due process, not mob pressure.”
The Lagos APC also defended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting its efforts to foster national unity and rebuild the economy under the Renewed Hope Agenda. It pointed to the inclusion of South East leaders in key national positions and ongoing infrastructural development as evidence of the government’s commitment to all regions.
“True progress will come not from chaos, but from cooperation and peace,” the party said.
The APC called on security agencies to remain alert and urged leaders from the South East and other parts of the country to resist what it termed “the antics of political opportunists.”
“There must indeed be a limit to bitter politics,” Oladejo concluded.
