LP Crisis: Kenneth Okonkwo Warns Nigerians to Avoid Abure-led NWC to Prevent Scams
Veteran Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has urged people to steer clear of the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP), warning that followers could be deceived and lose their hard-earned money.
In a post on his X account, Okonkwo criticized the NWC’s recent statement claiming that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had not rejected their last convention. He described the NWC as “a bunch of ill-fated liars” and accused them of failing to provide adequate notice of their convention to INEC, making it legally void.
He stated, “The recent statement from the rejected Abure-led NWC, signed by Obiorah Ifoh, falsely claims that INEC did not reject their convention. The statement neglects to include key details about the notification dates to INEC, which were inadequate, rendering the notice void under Section 82(5) of the Electoral Act. INEC’s non-attendance was due to this lack of legal notification, not a choice to skip the event.”
Okonkwo also highlighted that the convention lacked proper voting procedures, as members and delegates were not allowed to vote as required by Section 82(3) of the Electoral Act. He accused the NWC of failing to conduct necessary ward, local, and state congresses before the convention, thus invalidating it.
“The convention was conducted illegally, and INEC’s rejection was justified. I advise everyone to avoid these deceitful individuals to avoid being scammed,” he added.
Previously, Okonkwo distanced himself from the Abure-led NWC, criticizing it for corruption and incompetence. He had left the APC, believing it was also corrupt, only to find similar issues within the Labour Party’s current leadership.
