LP Crisis: NLC Distances Itself from State Congresses
The Labour Party National Transition Committee (LPNTC), established by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has distanced itself from the upcoming State Congresses announced by Labour Party National Chairman Julius Abure.
Tony Akani, Chairman of the Media and Publicity Subcommittee, announced this in a statement on Friday in Abuja. In response, Labour Party National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh dismissed the LPNTC as an unrecognized entity within the party, urging the public to disregard statements from it regarding Labour Party activities.
Akani clarified that the public notice aimed to inform members of the Labour Party nationwide that the Ward, Local Government Area, and State congresses allegedly being organized by the suspended former acting national chairman Julius Abure, along with his INEC-discredited Nnewi convention impersonators in various states, were contrary to a subsisting court judgment.
He emphasized that these planned congresses do not have the backing of the Nigeria Electoral Act, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), or the Nigerian Constitution, which govern political party operations.
Akani further noted that INEC, Labour Party leader Peter Obi, and other legitimate stakeholders did not attend, participate in, or recognize the Nnewi convention and have consistently dissociated themselves from it. He reiterated that any actions taken by individuals claiming to have been elected at the Nnewi convention are invalid.
