Ondo Guber: INEC to Provide Hotlines for Media to Enhance Accurate Reporting
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to provide telephone hotlines for media practitioners covering the upcoming off-cycle governorship election in Ondo State, scheduled for November 16. This initiative aims to help journalists verify any ambiguous issues before reporting.
Amosa Lamidi, the Head of the Department of Electoral Operations at INEC, made this announcement during a workshop for media executives in Akure, the capital of Ondo State. Lamidi, represented by Mr. Tope Onojobi, indicated that these hotlines would be available to journalists prior to election day.
Additionally, Lamidi stated that a situation room would be established to handle calls regarding ongoing developments and to address inquiries from the media during the election process. He urged media professionals to collaborate with INEC to ensure that the information disseminated is accurate, thereby helping to prevent political violence in the state.
Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, emphasized the importance of holding politicians and all stakeholders, including INEC, accountable. He was represented by Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner.
Olumekun reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to providing timely and accurate information to journalists about the election. He highlighted the need for unity among all parties to address challenges such as voter apathy, misinformation, and logistical issues that may hinder citizens from collecting their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
“With your collaboration, we can tackle these challenges directly and ensure that every eligible voter in Ondo State is prepared to make their voice heard on Election Day,” he stated.
