Ondo State Local Government Election Indefinitely Postponed
The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has indefinitely postponed the local government election scheduled to take place in the state. Dr. Joseph Aremo, the Chairman of ODIEC, made this announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Monday in Akure, the state capital.
Originally, ODIEC had set July 13 as the date for the election across the 18 local government areas and 33 local council development areas. However, a state High Court ruling in June declared the creation of the 33 LCDAs by the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu unconstitutional. The court ruled that the law creating the LCDAs, which was signed by the late governor in Ibadan and not within the state, was invalid.
During the meeting on Monday, Dr. Aremo cited the non-compliance of political parties with the electoral process as the reason for the election’s postponement.
“The political parties failed to submit their nomination forms and did not adhere to the adjusted timetable provided since our last meeting,” Dr. Aremo explained.
“As part of the preparations for the election, political parties were expected to submit their lists of agents between June 26 and June 28. In our previous meeting with political party leaders, we emphasized that the July 13 election date was fixed and would not be changed,” he added.
