Members of Nigeria’s newly formed opposition coalition have explained their decision to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, the coalition’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the ADC was chosen for its openness to reform and alignment with the coalition’s core values and vision.

“When we began this journey, we had clear criteria—what kind of party we wanted to work with,” Abdullahi explained. “Some of our members coming from the APC immediately ruled it out, arguing that the founding ideals of the party had been abandoned.”

He acknowledged that while the ADC may not be a perfect match, it presents a strong opportunity for structural reform. He added that the selection of former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman was deliberate, citing his reputation as a unifying figure trusted across political divides.

ADC Officially Adopted at High-Level Abuja Meeting

Earlier on Wednesday, coalition leaders gathered at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where they formally adopted the ADC as their collective platform to take on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

The high-profile meeting was attended by notable political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party leader Peter Obi, and former governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi. Others present included Senator Dino Melaye, media mogul Dele Momodu, Solomon Dalung, Senators Gabriel Suswam and Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, and retired Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

With this alignment, the opposition coalition aims to present a united front to challenge the APC’s hold on power and offer Nigerians what they describe as a “credible alternative for national recovery.”
