OSSIEC Sets Eligibility Rules for Osun Local Government Elections
Ahead of the February 15, 2025 local government election, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) has announced eligibility regulations for participating political parties and preparations for the electoral process.
OSSIEC Chairman Hashim Abioye revealed these details on Wednesday in Osogbo through a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Yemi Badru. Abioye emphasized that OSSIEC is adhering to the timetable and schedule of activities set earlier this year for the Osun local council elections.
He highlighted the imminent primaries for political parties and the issuance of eligibility regulations to ensure that only qualified candidates are fielded. Abioye stressed the importance of these regulations, noting that any candidate found unqualified will not appear on the ballots, as the Commission’s Screening Committee will address eligibility issues promptly.
Abioye further clarified the resignation requirements for civil servants interested in contesting political positions, stating a 30-day resignation notice before the election date. He differentiated the resignation guidelines between government employees and appointees, underscoring the Commission’s adherence to electoral laws and regulations.
Regarding the electoral process, Abioye announced that the appointment of electoral officers, assistant electoral officers, and other necessary staff will be finalized in the coming days. He assured the electorate of OSSIEC’s dedication to conducting a transparent, credible, and fair local government election in Osun State.
