Osun APC Accuses Governor Adeleke of Mismanaging State Health Insurance Agency
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of using deceit to manage the Osun State Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS).
The APC, through a statement by its chairman Tajudeen Lawal on Tuesday, alleged that Governor Adeleke’s administration is misleading the people of the state. Lawal claimed that OHIS, once a source of pride, has significantly declined under the current government.
Despite substantial health support from the Federal Government and various donors, the APC alleged that the state’s health sector is being neglected, with hospitals lacking essential drugs and supplies. Lawal stated, “Today, the agency is poorly funded as many of the hospital and health providers previously in contract or retainership with the agency are now disengaging in droves over lack of payment of deserving capitation.”
He questioned why the Osun government is offering inadequate capitation to health providers despite receiving significant federal funding. “In 2023, the Federal Government of Nigeria gave a grant of nearly N4bn to the Osun State Government, part of which was to cater for the health insurance of the vulnerable citizens of the state. So why is the state government not funding the insurance scheme appropriately?”
Lawal also criticized the enrollment of pensioners and senior citizens in the health scheme, noting that the maximum capitation budgeted for each retiree is only N650, insufficient for even basic medication.
He urged citizens to hold the governor accountable for the aid, grants, and federal allocations received over the past 19 months. Lawal revealed that in 2024, Osun State expects N42bn in aid and grants from the Federal Government and other donors, including a UNICEF grant for malaria and tuberculosis drugs. He warned, “These monies should be monitored before they are diverted for the prosecution of the 2026 governorship election.”
In response, Dr. Rasaq Akindele, Executive Secretary of the Osun Health Insurance Agency, stated that the agency currently has 267,000 enrollees and is performing well. He denied the opposition’s claims, asserting that the agency has not defaulted on payments and that OHIS offers the highest capitation and tariffs in the South West. He also noted that the support from the current administration exceeds what the agency has received since its creation.
“I am sure no sane person will say OHIS is underperforming. If you cannot see, you will hear, if you cannot hear, you will feel, even the dead would wish they were alive to enjoy the health packages under the people’s Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke,” Akindele concluded.
