Peter Obi Reaffirms One-Term Presidency Pledge, Emphasizes Service Over Power
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has restated his commitment to serve only one term if elected, emphasizing that genuine leadership can bring transformative change within four years.
In a statement shared via his official Facebook page, Obi expressed surprise at the public reaction to his promise of a single-term presidency, describing the concerns as a reflection of growing doubt about the possibility of impactful leadership within a short period.
“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation,” Obi said. “By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.”
The former Anambra State governor distanced himself from the desperation often associated with political ambition, stressing that his drive for leadership is rooted in patriotism and not personal gain. He stated that he has never resorted to electoral malpractice or political thuggery in his career and challenged critics to investigate his record.
“There are some traits associated with desperation which in no way are in any of my political behaviours—like aggressive rhetoric, unrealistic promises, or personal attacks on opponents,” Obi noted. “Ask those who have contested against me—none were denied their rights or victimized.”
Obi argued that a four-year term is enough to set Nigeria on a path of recovery if the government prioritizes integrity, transparency, and the welfare of its citizens. He cited misallocated government spending—such as on luxury presidential jets—as examples of how national resources could be redirected towards critical sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
He further pledged to uphold the rule of law, ensure credible elections, and restore trust in public institutions during his proposed single term in office.
“Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service,” Obi asserted. “If given the mandate for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all.”
Peter Obi’s renewed statement comes amid ongoing national conversations around governance, accountability, and the future of democratic leadership in Nigeria.
