Renowned media personality and former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, has criticized Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his recent pledge to serve only one term if elected president.

Speaking during Monday’s edition of The Morning Show on Arise Television, Abati described Obi’s statement as a “sign of desperation,” warning Nigerians not to fall for such political tactics.

“What I am saying is that any politician who comes to you and says, ‘I am going to do only one term’—that is a sign of desperation,” Abati said. “It will not work.”

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, made headlines recently after reiterating his intention to serve a single term if elected, prompting mixed reactions across the country. His stance was also publicly dismissed by Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, who challenged the practicality of the one-term promise.

Abati further likened Obi’s rhetoric—particularly his previous campaign statements about serving food and engaging in grassroots activities—to publicity stunts, arguing that they add little value to the core issues facing Nigeria.

“Just like the gimmick about serving food or carrying plates at parties—better left to event organisers—these are signs of desperation. It will not work,” he added.

The former presidential aide emphasized that true progress in Nigeria would only come when voters prioritize competence over sentiments such as ethnicity, religion, or regional affiliation.

“Nigeria will begin to move forward when the people are politically educated enough to vote based on merit, not identity,” Abati concluded.
