Tinubu Hosts Reconciliation Meeting Over Rivers State Political Crisis
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu convened a high-level reconciliation meeting on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, aimed at ending the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State.
The closed-door session brought together all the principal actors in the dispute, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and other assembly members.
This latest peace effort follows President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, which saw the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the State House of Assembly amid intensifying political tensions.
Speaking after the meeting in an interview with Sunday Moses, President Tinubu’s official videographer, both Governor Fubara and Minister Wike reaffirmed their commitment to peace and cooperation.
Wike stated:
“We have all agreed to work together. Everything is over. We are members of the same political family. As humans, we have disagreements. We also have time to settle those disagreements. There is no more acrimony. Everything is over. It’s a day we have to thank the Almighty.”
Governor Fubara added:
“It’s important that this day has come. What we need in Rivers is peace. We shall do everything in our power to sustain peace in Rivers State. President Tinubu has demonstrated once again that he wants peace for Rivers State.”
This marks the second major peace initiative brokered by President Tinubu, following a similar agreement signed by key political figures in December 2023. Thursday’s talks are seen as a critical step toward long-term stability, as the President again brought together the state’s political stakeholders to reconcile and commit to peaceful governance.
