Tinubu not Responsible for Nigeria’s Economic Misery, Says APC Member
Ismaeel Ahmed acknowledges that the President has made tough decisions that have caused discomfort and financial strain for everyone, but he does not believe the President should be solely blamed for it.
Amidst the challenges faced by Nigerians due to the high cost of living and increased prices of goods, Ismaeel Ahmed, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defended President Bola Tinubu, stating that he should not be held accountable for the country’s economic difficulties.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today show, Ahmed emphasized that the tough choices made by the current administration were crucial for the nation’s economic recovery.
These decisions were necessary and had been part of the campaign promises made not only by President Bola Tinubu but also by other candidates.
In this period of realignment, uncomfortable decisions have been taken by the President which have affected everyone, although it would be unfair to solely blame him.
The President implemented tough economic measures such as removing fuel subsidies, resulting in increased living and transportation costs.
Tinubu also adjusted the naira exchange rate by eliminating multiple rates, causing a significant devaluation of the national currency.
Prior to the upcoming presidential election on February 25, 2023, both Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) pledged to end fuel subsidies and unify the exchange rate.
Despite Tinubu’s relatively short time in office, there are various political strategies being considered for the next election cycle. Recent reports suggest discussions between Atiku and Obi, which Ahmed noted was not unexpected, affirming his party’s commitment to delivering democracy’s benefits to Nigerians.
It’s no shock to me, I fail to see the fuss. Being in power, we welcome the idea of a robust opposition to ensure we stay accountable and uphold true democratic principles.
Nigerians will vote based on their knowledge of the candidates vying for various positions. I eagerly anticipate a substantial opposition as we have yet to experience one since taking office.
