AFCON 2025: CAF Won’t Sanction Nigeria Over Libya Snub – Oparaku
Former Super Eagles defender Mobi Oparaku is optimistic that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will not impose sanctions on Nigeria regarding the cancelled 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya.
The Group D second leg match was called off after Nigeria’s flight was diverted to a remote airport in Libya, where players were held for over 18 hours without food, water, or internet access. In light of this ordeal, the Super Eagles chose not to proceed with the game.
Although CAF has delisted the fixture and referred the matter to its disciplinary body, Oparaku believes Nigeria will avoid penalties. He stated, “CAF knows that we are not what the Libyans have reported; we are not biased and never mistreat our visitors. CAF understands we wouldn’t act in such a manner.”
He expressed confidence in receiving a fair outcome, saying, “I am confident that no sanction will be imposed on Nigeria.”
Despite not playing their matchday 4 fixture, Nigeria remains at the top of the group with seven points, while Libya sits at the bottom with just one point.
