Nearly five years after first claiming the WBC super-lightweight world title, Chantelle “Il Capo” Cameron has been officially named a two-time WBC super-lightweight world champion. This comes after Katie Taylor vacated the belt to focus on personal matters.

Cameron (21-1, 8 KOs) initially captured the WBC title in 2020 with a points victory over Brazil’s Adriana Dos Santos Araujo at the Covid-affected Marshall Arena. She later cemented her legacy by securing the undisputed super-lightweight championship following wins against Mary McGee and Jessica McCaskill.

In 2023, Cameron notably defended her undisputed status by defeating the legendary Katie Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs) — marking the first time Taylor was beaten. However, in a dramatic rematch six months later, Taylor avenged her loss and reclaimed the crown.

Since then, Cameron has continued to shine, overcoming Elhem Mekhaled to claim the WBC interim title and successfully defending it against Patricia Berghult and Jessica Camara. Meanwhile, Taylor has maintained her dominance by winning her trilogy against pound-for-pound star Amanda Serrano, currently leading 3-0.

With speculation mounting about a potential trilogy fight between Cameron and Taylor — their series currently tied at 1-1 — Taylor surprised the boxing world by vacating her WBC belt and being designated Champion in Recess by the WBC.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that the vacant super-lightweight title would be contested between Cameron and Derby-based welterweight Sandy Ryan (8-3-1, 3 KOs). However, it has now been announced by Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) — Cameron’s promotional team since May — that Cameron has been elevated to full WBC super-lightweight world champion.

At this time, it remains unclear whether Sandy Ryan has withdrawn from contention or if she will be the challenger for Cameron’s first title defense under the full championship status.
