Tysie Gallagher Retains British Boxing Title After Defeating Ellie Hellewell
Tysie Gallagher successfully defended her British and Commonwealth super-bantamweight titles in Sheffield, delivering a sharp performance while dedicating the win to her late mother-in-law, Diane Cleary, who was tragically murdered in January.
The bout marked Gallagher’s return to the ring after a year-long absence, but there were no signs of rust at the Park Community Arena. Despite the emotional toll and time away, she looked composed and confident throughout the fight.
Her opponent, Ellie Hellewell, came in with momentum, having outpointed Stevi Levy—whom Gallagher previously defeated—in a strong showing earlier this year. But Hellewell, though active and game, struggled to match Gallagher’s slick movement and sharp counters.
The early rounds were tentative, with Hellewell landing a few eye-catching flurries using her reach. In the second, she continued to make use of her long southpaw jab to keep Gallagher at bay.
However, by the third round, Gallagher began to find her rhythm. She picked her moments to close the distance, landing clean counters before swiftly exiting the pocket, showcasing her trademark footwork.
Hellewell responded with a decent sixth round, using her range effectively. But Gallagher soon regained control, growing more fluid as the fight progressed and controlling the exchanges in the later rounds.
The judges scored the contest 98-93, 97-93, and 97-94, all in favour of Gallagher. After the win, the Luton native expressed interest in facing unified world champion Ellie Scotney or domestic rival Ramla Ali in future bouts.
