The super-welterweight division remains one of boxing’s most vibrant weight classes, with several big names vying for the top spot. Among them is knockout artist Vergil Ortiz Jr., who looks to solidify his status and move one step closer to a full world title by defeating Erickson Lubin in their upcoming bout.

Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs), the reigning WBC interim super-welterweight champion, claimed the title with a dominant performance over Serhii Bohachuk in August 2024, and successfully defended it against Israil Madrimov earlier this year. Notably, those two fights are the only times the 27-year-old Texan has gone the distance in his professional career.

Now, Ortiz is looking to return to his trademark explosive form when he takes on Florida southpaw Lubin on Saturday, November 8, at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas — live on DAZN.

At the official launch press conference, Ortiz praised Lubin’s fighting IQ and experience, highlighting those traits as reasons why he views him as a serious threat.

“He’s a dangerous fighter because he has intellect, he has experience, and he has power,” Ortiz said. “He legitimately goes in there to fight people. I respect that about him, but he’s also a smart fighter as well. When you add both of those into the equation, that’s when you have a dangerous opponent.”

Ortiz also revealed that Lubin’s pedigree has reinvigorated his motivation during training camp. “Just being in the ring with someone like Erickson Lubin motivates me to train harder. I’ve had fights where I just wanted to get through it. But this time, I look forward to coming to the gym. I want to do good in sparring. That’s the kind of fight this is.”

Lubin (26-2, 18 KOs) — a 12-year pro who first challenged for a world title just three years into his career — returned the respect, calling Ortiz a “great competitor” while promising fans a memorable battle.

“I took no steps back in my career. I’ve fought top opposition every step of the way, and Vergil Ortiz is no different,” said Lubin. “This is my third undefeated opponent in a row, and I’m looking to become that guy at 154.”

“I think the fans are in for a treat. It’s a black fighter versus a Mexican fighter — that always makes for a great fight. It’s going to be a historic matchup.”
